PVC is the cheapest and lightest material. It does not require any particular maintenance: soap and water are all that is needed to clean it! It is reputed for its excellent thermal insulation: the PVC shutter protects against the cold in the winter and heat in the summer. However, PVC is not suitable for windows wider than two metres as it is flexible. PVC has a shorter lifetime than aluminium. PVC shutters are likely to become deformed and brittle with age.
Aluminium provides less thermal insulation than wood or PVC. However, it is reputed for its long lifetime, its resilience and its sound insulation properties. Unlike PVC, aluminium is recommended for large windows as it is a rigid material that adapts to many architectural constraints. It does not require any particular maintenance and is not damaged by the elements. It offers numerous options for personalisation and comes in a wide range of options.
Wood is the heaviest material but it has an attractive, authentic appearance. You will need a motor with a high torque for a wooden shutter. Wood offers good protection against attempts to break in and good thermal insulation. However, it requires rigorous maintenance, as without it the shutter is likely to deteriorate quickly when exposed to the elements. Depending on the region and the climate, this maintenance involves the application of wood stain and paint every 2 to 4 years.
